Land Sterling provides Iftar for Impoverished Muslim Community in the Philippines

During the Holy month of Ramadan, Muslims across the world observe fasting, prayer, and reflection to profoundly receive the grace and generosity of Allah. During this holiest time of the year is when Muslims must find it in their hearts to reach out and share their graces with people in need.

Land Sterling with the help of Ako Bakwit, an organized group from the Philippines which aims to promote, empower, and protect the rights and welfare of Internally Displaced Persons (bakwit), decided to provide free iftar to the displaced Muslim people in specific areas of Manila.

The goal of Project Free Iftar, a corporate social responsibility venture, is to provide assistance to displaced people from Mindanao which is the southernmost island group of the Philippines.

These displaced people from Mindanao are among the most poverty-stricken Filipinos. Prior to their displacement, Muslim from the region usually lived in peace in the seaside, mountains, and agricultural lands. Now, they live in poor government-provided shelters or in settlements with abhorrent living conditions. Some of these people decided to seek refuge and opportunities in greater Manila areas because they were forced to flee their homes and their way of living due to natural calamities or decades-long wars.

Despite having support from the government and some non-government organizations, it is obvious that these families still need support in order to have a decent living especially now that the COVID-19 pandemic situation in the Philippines is still far from being controlled.

With Ako Bakwit leading the volunteer and distribution work on the project grounds, Land Sterling assigned a dedicated team of five (5) with one (1) group leader in each specified area which will facilitate the distribution of food items on a daily basis throughout the month of Ramadan from April 13, 2021 – May 12, 2021.

Around 1000 Muslim Filipinos, most of them situated in the Islamic Center of Quiapo in the country’s capital Manila will benefit from this drive. The individuals will receive hot meals, water and health supplements.

To ensure the safety of the volunteers, beneficiaries, and their families, the distribution will be conducted with proper health and safety protocols observed.

Project Free Iftar is guided by the principle that no man, woman or child will be left behind, especially during this challenging time in a pandemic. That even in this time of crisis, we should recognize and work together to support the rights of displaced people and alleviate their poor living conditions.

Through the grace of Allah and to fully grasp the teachings of the Qur’an, it is in this time of need that the people should show compassion towards one another.

Ramadan Kareem!
